The most recent crime rate data has been released and overall it is good news for Melbourne residents.
The number of criminal incidents recorded by Victoria Police in the year to 30 June 2022 was 341,367, which is down 9.6% from 377,487 incidents recorded in the same period last year. It’s important to note that crime rates have, like many indicators, been impacted by Covid-related lockdowns, but a downward trend in crime is always a good outcome.

The “Property and Deception Offences” category has declined as would be expected following Victoria’s lockdown restrictions, however it will be interesting to see how the current 12 months’ statistics look, given the return to normality and previously inclining trend prior to 2021.
The other factor to be aware of when looking at possible increases in crime are the recent hikes in interest rates. As explained by Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Rick Nugent, “We know that sometimes puts pressure on families and people, and some people can resort to crime. That’s worldwide, so we’re really focused on that.”.
